PADRE ISLAND NATIONAL SEA SHORE MILKY WAY etc

The above two photographs were taken in July 2022, at a STAR Party our club

ASTRONOMY CLUB

that we put on for the general public. If you notice there are differences in each photo.

The first photo on the left was taken with my SIGMA 14mm F/1.8 lens which is a real magnetic for light. Nice wide field, maybe a bit too wide? The color balance is about right for this photo taken with my Nikon D810a. However, notice the intense lights shining over the top of the fence of the Padre Island National Seashore "Observation Deck". Well, this photo was taken about 10 or 11 at night. People were still coming in off the beach with their cars at that time. So, what would they do??? They drive over to the bathrooms right next to the Observation Deck, leave their lights on so they can see where they are going, which wipes out the night sky! You can't win. It is what it is.

Now if you notice the second photo. It is the same image but different. Well, I used my Nikon D850, with a Zeiss 25mm F/1.4 lens for this one. Yes, I did work on this and the other photo in light room, and these are "stacked" images but, you can see the difference in the colors of the night sky. The D810 has a more natural color, where as the D850 seems to be on the green side? Plus, if you notice the vignetting around the fringes (edges appear darker, like looking through a tube). You can also plainly see the difference in the field of view. The Sigma 14mm has 112 degrees of viewing, where as the Zeiss 25mm views life at 84 degrees. With a slightly narrow field of view you are able to obtain a magnification of the image. That is, you can see a bit more detail with the 25mm lens. If you really want detail then try a 200 mm telephoto lens or better yet, the Nikon 400mm. I think the 400mm cost about $12,000.00. Hey, it is only money. ha.

Well, I could have screwed up a bit here? I am not sure now, but I am not sure where I set the F/stops. Should be at or about F/1.4. You can stop it down a tad to say F/2.0, which will reduce the coma (lens distortion of some of the star images on the edges). That is your call. However, the D810a really shins in it's work on the Milkway. It only has a 36MP full frame processor, where as the D850 is of course full frame with 47.5MP. However, the biasing for red is not there and the colors (even in Light room) are not as natural.
